Our Journey • Rooted in Purpose, Driven by Service

Over 30 Years of Service and Legal Excellence

On 3 May 1993, Hugh and his wife Michelle opened the doors of Hugh Raichlin Attorneys in Grove City, Orange Grove, with three young children and little guarantee of what lay ahead. Their first client needed assistance drafting a contract with Radio 702 – a modest beginning, but one that established a foundation of principle, trust, and service.

Hugh’s close friend, Stan Orelowitz, generously offered the fledgling firm workspace in his Palm Grove office. Hugh consulted in the boardroom while Michelle worked from a small alcove desk. Before long, they outgrew the space, moved upstairs to a 50 m² office, and eventually transformed two neighboring houses in Norwood into Law Chambers on The Avenue – the home of the firm to this day.

Our firm’s journey has been about more than physical growth. It has been about cases that matter. From property transfers and family law disputes to precedent-setting cases in the Supreme Court of Appeal, Hugh Raichlin Attorneys has contributed meaningfully to South African common law through reported judgments.

Yet “our story” is also deeply personal. Hugh often reflects on the grace and support of family, the loyalty of long-serving staff, and the trust of clients who have allowed him to share in some of life’s most significant chapters — marriages, estates, and livelihoods. Running this practice has always been more a calling than a career.

Looking ahead, the firm embraces innovation and diversification — from expanding mediation and arbitration services to assisting South Africans of Lithuanian descent in reclaiming EU citizenship. While the chapters ahead continue to unfold, our founding values of integrity, compassion, and commitment remain unchanged.

“The chapters ahead are yet unwritten, but the values of integrity, compassion, and commitment endure.”
